Wondering When To Schedule With an Orthodontist in Montgomeryville?

A little girl smiling at a dental officeAre you the parent of a young child and suspect that they might need braces? If so, they certainly wouldn’t stand out among their peers, since around 75% of kids need orthodontics to straighten their teeth! And as you know, there are countless benefits to having straight teeth. It’s not only about improving the appearance of their smile, which certainly enhances their self-image and self-esteem for the rest of their lives. It’s also about making sure their bite is properly aligned so they can chew and speak with ease. But although the benefits of having straight teeth are clear, what’s the best age to take them to see an orthodontist in Montgomeryville? Keep reading to find out!

What’s the Best Age To Schedule the First Visit With an Orthodontist?

Many orthodontists recommend bringing in your child a little after they start getting permanent teeth – usually at age seven. But that doesn’t mean they’ll be getting braces right away!

Age seven is preferable because, in some cases, proactive steps can be taken to prevent existing bite issues from becoming worse. For example, they might recommend special retainers or other appliances at this stage. Catching these problems early can make it easier and faster to straighten their teeth down the road.

Having said that, don’t worry if your child is older than age seven! It can be helpful to see them for the first time at that age, but braces can be done at any time. In fact, it’s not uncommon at all to start the process in the pre-teen or early teen years.

What Can You Expect at the First Visit?

The first visit is really just an opportunity for the orthodontist to gather information about your child’s bite so they can put together a treatment plan. Here’s what you can expect:

  • The orthodontist will start by asking you and your child questions about any specific concerns you have and habits they might have such as thumbsucking. They’ll also review your child’s medical and dental history.
  • X-rays and photographs will be taken so the bone and jaw structure can be closely evaluated and the position of any unerupted teeth can be determined.
  • Impressions will be taken to create a mold of your child’s upper and lower teeth.
  • Using all of this information, an orthodontist may give you recommendations for immediate treatment or tell you when the ideal time to start dental braces in Montgomery would be.

Getting braces is a rite of passage for many children and teens. By scheduling that first visit early on, you can make that rite of passage as easy as possible!
